This scholarship, supported by a donation from David and Jill Spain, is open to any AAST Associate Member. The duration of the scholarship is one year from the annual meeting to the annual meeting. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide an Associate Member with a year-long, one-on-one mentorship experience with an accomplished, senior leader in the AAST. The scholarship will culminate with a presentation at the subsequent AAST annual meeting.

The scholarship will begin on September 14, 2025, and end on September 12, 2026.  

AAST Vice President of the Board of Managers will be the mentor. This senior member of AAST has a wealth of leadership, research, and acute care surgery experience.  Soon after the following selection, the scholarship recipient will begin to meet with the mentor to discuss objectives and goals for the year

Application process:

  1. Must be an AAST Associate Member before being selected
  2. The application is due by August 31, 2025.
  3. A statement of Interest with objectives and goals you’d like to achieve for the year will be required.  
  4. The recipient will be required to submit a final report by September 1, 2026
  5. A brief presentation will be required during the Scholarship Presentations portion of the 84th Annual Meeting of AAST and Clinical Congress of Acute Care Surgery, September 16-19, 2026 in Dallas, TX

Funding Level:  $2,000

The scholarship will be used to fund costs to attend the 84th Annual Meeting of AAST and Clinical Congress of Acute Care Surgery, September 16-19, 2025 in Dallas, TX (hotel for four nights: approximately $1,300; Airfare: $500, and stipend for expenses: $200).  Funding will be paid by check to the recipient by June 1, 2026.

Meeting registration will be complimentary for the regular meeting portion (Emergency Surgery Course and guest registration fees are additional).
