Pediatric ED Thoracotomy
Emergency department thoracotomy (EDT) can be lifesaving for select adult trauma patients presenting in extremis. Guidelines for EDT in adult patients are well established, but instructions for optimal use in the pediatric population are evolving. When adult guidelines are broadly applied to children, studies fail to show improved outcomes. In this article, we review the use of EDT in pediatric patients.
