Advances integration of palliative care in trauma and acute care surgery. Develops Goals of Care documents and collaborates on webinars and annual meeting educational sessions.
Goals of Care
Cervical spine fractures in the elderly patient represent a significant clinical challenge, with mortality rates exceeding 25% at one year. As the population ages, trauma surgeons increasingly encounter these complex cases that require clinical expertise and an understanding of frailty, realistic prognostication, and early goals of care discussions.
The AAST Palliative Care Committee has developed these practical guides to support clinicians across all stages of training, including practicing surgeons, fellows, residents, and medical students. Designed for real-world use, these resources can be displayed in ICUs and resident workrooms or incorporated into educational settings. All guides are available for download and printing below. We welcome feedback and suggestions for future topics—please email [email protected] with your ideas.
