The AAST Diversity Essay Contest invites medical students, residents, and fellows to share their perspectives on acute care surgery through a 1,000-word essay responding to one of two prompts. Hosted by the AAST Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee in collaboration with the Associate Member Council, this initiative is designed to amplify emerging voices, highlight lived experiences, and foster inclusion and opportunity within trauma and acute care surgery.
Each year, selected winning and runner-up essays are published in Trauma Surgery & Acute Care Open (TSACO), offering thoughtful reflections on career paths, equity, service, mentorship, and the evolving identity of the specialty.
