
77th Annual Meeting of AAST & 4th World Trauma Congress Recap
The 77th Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and Clinical Congress of the Acute Care Surgery was held September 26-29h at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Diego, California. This year’s meeting was held in conjunction with the 4th World Trauma Consult. The meeting included 67 oral presentations, 26 Quick Shot presentations and 138 posters which were selected from 524 submitted abstracts. The World Trauma Congress also included a numerous scientific, clinical and poster sessions.
Highlights of the program included the Presidential Address by Dr. Michael Rotondo titled the “Execute on the Vision: Pyramids and Mirages in Shifting Sands” https://www.pscp.tv/traumadoctors/1dRJZgNRbrDxB. The introduction of Dr. Rotondo by the President-Elect Dr. Bruce Croce included a video highlighting Dr. Rotondo’s skills as a drummer. The address covered a wide range of topics on what he learned over his extensive career in academic trauma surgery as well as leadership of several organizations. It also included a number of memorable quotes including “it doesn’t matter what you call us. We just want them to call us” and “survive and thrive”.
The two Master Surgeon Lectures highlighted international trauma care. The first one was delivered by Dr. Ian Civil from New Zealand entitled A Long Run for a Short Slide: A Story of Trauma Care in New Zealand“and the second by Dr. Christine Gaarder from Norway entitled “Advise, Advance, Support, Teach - the true meaning of AAST to me.” (https://www.pscp.tv/traumadoctors/1vAxREwAzgaJl) The 44rd annual Fitts lecture entitled “Damage Control and Firearm: The Tale of Two Cities” was delivered by Dr. C William Schwab, a past president of AAST. (https://www.pscp.tv/traumadoctors/1RDGlWPgYnmKL) His talk reflected back on his 25 years of clinical and scientific work as well as direct public policy efforts to lower firearm deaths .
The meeting was well attended by over 1500 people including 236 international attendees from 36 different countries. Corporate sponsors including the Gold Sponsor Siemens Healthineers, and Bronze Sponsors Envision Physician Services, and Optiscan. The meeting adjourned on Saturday already looking forward to the 2019 78th Annual Meeting in Dallas TX.
