    Description:

The Acute Care Surgery Fellowship program at Iowa Healthcare (formerly University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics) is a one-year non-accredited program that provides the opportunity for an in-depth focus on the nuances of trauma, emergency surgery and advanced operative experience. The ACS Fellow will have broad exposure on both the trauma and emergency general surgery services, with opportunity for additional sub-specialty experiences on an individual basis (i.e. Burn Surgery). The Iowa Healthcare program incorporates the fellow into a junior faculty role and provides graduated autonomy, allowing the development and fine tuning of surgical skills and decision making. The fellow will take overnight call 3 times per month with a backup attending surgeon always available.

Acute Care Surgery Fellows will attend weekly Department of Surgery Grand Rounds/Department M&M, weekly trauma and EGS conferences, monthly Multidisciplinary Trauma Conferences, Trauma Performance Improvement and patient safety committee meetings.

Fellows work closely with every member in the Acute Care Surgery Division. There will be regular meetings between the Program Director and the Fellow, and the Program Director will share informal feedback during these times including feedback from other division attendings.

ACS Fellowship start date is July 1, 2025 with an option for a late start date of August 1, 2025.

Iowa Healthcare is an 866-bed facility which includes 190 pediatric beds at the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. In FY 2022, Iowa Healthcare performed 35,400 major surgeries and 186,199 minor surgeries. Iowa Healthcare has the only American College of Surgeons accredited Level I Trauma Center and is the only American Burn Association accredited Burn Treatment Center in the state of Iowa. The University of Iowa strives to create and foster a health system for all through health parity, diversity, equity & inclusion.

Requirements: American Board of Surgery certified or American board of Surgery eligible (must have completed 5 years of General Surgery residency prior to start of fellowship). American Osteopathic Board of Surgery eligibility and/or certification is also acceptable. No visas are offered at this time. A full Iowa license will be required on the fellowship start date, however, is not required at time of application. Candidates who strongly demonstrate an aptitude and commitment to an academic career in ACS will be prioritized.
