    Committee Chair Report
     
    The education committee needs volunteers! Please sign up if you are interested here.
    • The most recent Turnover Time featured Dr. Walter Biffl where we discussed "Don't mess with the pancreas! A multicenter analysis of the management of low-grade pancreatic injuries."  Dr. Julia Coleman was the Turnover Time raffle prize winner.
    • Save the date! We will be having our second annual webinar on March 22nd where you will learn everything you need to know about surgical critical care and acute care surgery fellowships. Please be sure to let any interested residents know.
    • We are collaborating with SCCPDS and EAST and are putting together a handbook for future fellows to use on how to navigate the fellowship process.
    • Be on the lookout for an AAST AM sponsored Grand Rounds in April!
    • We are working on updating our website to have more educational content available to you. If you would like to help, volunteer for the education committee!
    Scholarship, 
    Awards, and Development Chair Updates:
     
    AAST Scholarship opportunities are open! This year, there are now 4 $50,000 research scholarships! Click here or scroll down for more information.
    • Last quarter 20 associate members donated a total of $2775 to the Research and Education Fund
    • Dr. Caroline Park and Dr. Amanda Hambrecht were selected as the winners of the quarterly AAST AMC mentorship giveaway (I have not emailed them yet, waiting to get their emails from Brea)
    • Applications are open for the AAST Acute Care Surgery Scholarships.  Apply here.  Applications are due by March 1, 2021. 

    Communications and Social Media Chair Updates:

    If you haven't already, update your information in the associate member directory. This directory gives members opportunities to collaborate on multicenter studies, research projects, and to reach out to other members at institutions where you may be interested in discussing fellowship or a new faculty position.     • The Holiday Happy hour in December was a hit and congratulations to our trauma trivia prize winners! Keep your eyes peeled for info about our upcoming Spring Happy Hour, which will include virtual bingo and prizes!
    • New scrub caps are being sent out to ALL Associate Members - once yours arrives in the mail, make sure to take pictures of you wearing the scrub cap and post on Twitter with the hashtag #AASTswagchallenge (or can send to julia.coleman@cuanschutz.edu to post for you!).
    • If you are interested in getting more involved in the communications and branding of AAST Associate Membership, volunteer here for the Communications Committee.


    Info about Scholarships and Grants

    AAST offers 4 early investigator research grants and 20 annual meeting scholarships for medical students, residents, and in-training fellows. For additional information, click here
    • AAST Research Scholarships: 
      • The purpose of the AAST research scholarships is to solicit research applications from early-career investigators proposing basic science, translational, or clinical studies to advance trauma, surgical critical care, and emergency general surgery care.
      • Applications are due March 1, 2022

    • AAST/ACS Health Policy Scholarship:
    • Visiting Professor Program: 
      • To provide an active AAST and SBAS member who is a faculty member at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor and is within 15 years of their faculty appointment the opportunity to serve as a Visiting Professor for the Department of Surgery at a host institution.
      • Applications are due April 2022

      • Requirements for application:
        • Letter of interest with a summary of past participation and involvement in AAST and SBAS
        • Curriculum vitae
        • Letter of recommendation from their Department Chair
        • Provide a one-page summary of the area of expertise and examples of PowerPoint “grand rounds type” presentations previously delivered
        • The applicant must submit all of the above-required materials in one PDF to aast@aast.org
    • ACS/AAST International Scholarship: 
      • The scholarship of $5,000 provides the scholar with an opportunity to attend the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) annual meeting in Chicago, Illinois, September 21–24, 2022. As well as a visit to one or two Level I Trauma Centers or the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) headquarters at the American College of Surgeons in Chicago, IL, to learn about the standards for a trauma program/database and the importance of multidisciplinary Acute Care surgery care.
